Good Afternoon Feasters, welcome to this week's installment of FRIDAY FEAST. This week our shrinking wallets and expanding waist lines were undoubtedly honored to be in the presence of the greatness that is Jax Cafe. Jax Cafe, who is part of MSP Magazines top 50 restaurants for the 2014 edition, has maintained greatness for 75 years, which means they have done it for almost twice as long as I have. That said, I think it time for me and my overdeveloped palate to see what delectable dainties Jax has to offer.

Pierogi Platter

3 Potato & Cheese

3 Pot Roast

3 Featured Pierogi

I know this will be hard to believe but I love dumplings. They come in so many different forms and I they are all good. Jax Cafes Pierogis are no different. Slightly seared, in butter I'm sure, delicate and tasty. Stuffed with Roast, cheese and potato and the special was stuffed with sweet potato. They only way they could be better is if they were stuffed with Pierogi. 4 out of 5 forks

Jax Crabrolls

 The “Jax” Sandwich

Chilled and thinly sliced prime rib, served on

toasted ciabatta bun with lettuce, crispy fried

onions, provolone and creamy horseradish aioli

I love crab and I love rolls so this was a no brainer. They were not exactly what I was expecting, I was thinking Lobster Roll with crab, but tasty nonetheless. It is quite impressive how they managed to liquefy the crab as to inject it into the pastry. I am assuming thats what they do because I saw no presence of real crab. 3 out of 5 forks.

Certified angus chopped sirloin topped with

Tillamook Cheddar and crispy fried onions

THEY COOKED IT CORRECTLY!!!!! That earns to 2 forks because apparently that has become a skill. This was a solid burger. Nice warm pink center, juicy, big beef flavor and I like the crunch from the onions. I am also a bit picky when it comes to a burger bun and this was a bit on the dry side. Overall, I give it 3.5 out of 5 forks.

Chicken Pot Pie

A Jax favorite for years!

Really Jax? It's been a favorite of mine for years too! FICKA (Fairness in chubby kid act), my Grand Mammy used to make these every Saturday on the farm from scratch. Mmmmmmmmmm...that lady could cook. I miss helping her chase the chicken, pick the veggies, and rolling out the dough. She said she had a secret ingredient but I could never get it out of her. My guess is its was the well water. Nothing better than well water after playing in the yard. She used to tell me stories about how she met Grandpa and that she thinks it was her pot pies that got him to marry  her. Anyways, I digress, Jax version was not Grand Mammys but it was damn close. Flaky on the outside, chewy on the inside, tons of veggies and chicken. 4 out of 5 forks.

 Golabki (Stuffed Cabbage Rolls)

Cabbage roll, filled with beef and rice

covered in tomato sauce

Hell , I didn't know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised. I mean cabbage...? Were they out of tortillas? It was really good so quit with the faces. Make sure it is on your sh@t I should try list while in NE MPLS. I must say it is the first Golbaki I have had so I don't have a great reference. But the sauce was sweet, the beef and rice was seasoned to perfection and the cabbage was indeed present. 3.5 out of 5 forks.

The “Jax” Sandwich

Chilled and thinly sliced prime rib, served on

toasted ciabatta bun with lettuce, crispy fried

onions, provolone and creamy horseradish aioli

If I was not already fat, this sandwich would take me there. Chilled prime rib cooked perfectly (they can cook meat here) and then stacked on a chewy ciabatta bun, and the horseradish sauce...If you do not dump that damn ramekin of sauce on this sandwich..well, then we are not friends!  Did I mentioned the crispy fried onions? This may be the first time I have teared up while writing, exquisitely I might add, a food review. Just a great samich. 4.5 out of 5 forks.

Jax Cafe has been a staple in the NE MPLS neighborhood for years. The food was very good and the atmosphere can't be beat. Makes you think you have a net worth just by walking in there. The service was as good as it gets. Our server Cheryl, was outstanding! She told us the entire story about the Jax Cafe, showed us the outstanding patio for the summer(look for us on Fridays with Cigars) and most importantly she reminded me of Grand Mammy. All around great experience and can't wait to be back.
